Weight is a sensitive subject for most of us. It is a topic we mostly avoid and avoid to a point where we do not even step on the bathroom scale. When the scale shows the reading a typical comment may be that oh it is water weight or my clothes and shoes weigh 20 pounds. We have a difficult time facing up to the fact that our weight is not where it should be.

We cannot hide from this anymore. Our nation and even our planet is in an obesity crisis. Obesity itself is an issue and it is its side effects that lead to numerous health issues. Our quality of life is compromise and even our lifespan is decreased.

The US Centers for Disease Control report that two thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30. If Americans keep getting heavier at the current rate, the obesity epidemic will reach catastrophic proportions in the near future.

The Lancet medical journal reports that half of the people in the US will be obese by 2030.

Obesity poses serious health threats including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke and cancer. The culprits are right in front of us. Sugar, sugar more sugar … 180 pounds of sugar, per person, consumed in a year. Could it be the 168 liters of soda and spending some $2,000 on fast food?

The Social Solution

There is a way to tackle the challenge. Use the media that a high percentage of the population is using to increase awareness. Use social media to fight obesity.

The average North American teenager sends 3,339 text messages every month. If Facebook were a country it would be the third largest. Hey, one in five couples today meet online. YouTube is incredible and every minute there are 24 hours of video uploaded. Unique visitors to Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are 1.8 billion per month … that is billion not million. The most incredible stat is that none of these existed 8 years ago and this usage is just starting.

People trust recommendations from friends and the swing is away from advertising. When we have something worth sharing and we are excited by the results people listen to what we have to say. Social networking is the media that is widely use to do this. All it takes is a mouse click or a tap on a smartphone and your opinion is seen by all of your friends.

The obesity epidemic awareness can be exposed by people passing the word out via social media. Bottom line is most of us do care about our health, want to live longer and want to feel better.
