What is blogging in comparison to a regular website? In fact, can you blog without a website, or is the one necessary to do the other? Where do you learn how to start blogging for profit to make money online? To answer all these questions you must first have a registered domain name and web hosting account before you can set up your blog, and you can then either run it from a regular type of website or use the blog itself as your website.

So what is blogging in terms of internet marketing and where do you learn how to start blogging for profit? You have the option of two types of blog – one run from the CMS application provider’s own domain or hosted on your own domain. If you want to start blogging to make money then there really is only one realistic option: get your own domain name and web hosting services, and run your blog from that.

Ideally, you blog should have your own domain name that reflects your niche or online business. Google currently gives ranking points for domain names containing the main keyword for the domain. Thus, if your blog focuses on green widgets, having ‘green widgets’ in your domain name will be better than just ‘mysite’. You will find it next to impossible to achieve that with a blog that is not hosted on your own domain.

What is Blogging?

Back to the original question: what is blogging?  Blogging is fundamentally writing on a blog: it’s writing to others, giving news and your opinions. Originally ‘web logs’ were personal diaries, but they work only if they offer something to the reader: your story and experiences while trying to make money online, trying to come off prescription drugs or trying to travel on foot from Chicago to LA avoiding Route 66!

Blogging involves people commenting on your writing and others commenting back to them. It’s a dialogue and a monologue combined, and it can be used to make money. If you can offer something on your blog that your readers can use, and they are willing to pay for it, then you can sell it. Only – make sure first! If somebody comes across your blog and it’s nothing than just one big sales page, then forget it!

If they come across your blog and it offers useful information that can help them, they will read it and bookmark your blog.  Maybe even send the link to Facebook or StumbleUpon or bookmark it on Delicious or Blink. That gives you free advertising!

Appear Reliable and Honest

After one or two useful posts, you could lead up to a product that would help your readers achieve their personal goals.  Maybe an eBook or some software application, or perhaps a service or membership site you have come across that may be able to help. Don’t push it, but suggest it as one possibility they could pursue.  Make sure the links have your affiliate link embedded so you get your commission if any decide to purchase.

You could use your blog to review certain products, but if you do so make sure you review a few, and not just try to push one product. Make your review honest, and include negatives as well as positives. Sure, you are trying to sell, but you are also trying to make a name as being reliable and knowledgeable about your niche.

How to Start Blogging

If you don’t have a blog yet, then cut your teeth on blogging.com or wordpress.com – these are free blogs run from the provider’s own platform. Blogger is run by Google, but is limited in the customization possible, while WordPress is much the same except for one service it provides that Blogger does not: you can download the system to your own domain.

If you have your own website, or even just a domain, you can download the blogging software from wordpress.org and run your own blog from your own website using your own domain name. That will make it more likely that you can make money from your blog than if you ran it from the WordPress site or from Google’s.

If you download the WordPress software to your own domain your blog won’t be ‘yoursite.blogspot.com’, but will be ‘yoursite.com’. A big difference and more professional! If you have a web hosting service that enables add-on or parked domains, then you can download WordPress to that, use the domain name for your blog name and URL, and customize it using the WordPress plugins and themes available free online. Be sure to self host your own blog with your own domain.

So what is blogging? Blogging is what you want to make of it, and the more work you put into it the more you get from it. How to start? Download the software to your own domain and take it from there. It won’t take you long to learn how to start blogging for profit.
